What It Means to “Fill Your Cup” This Holiday Season

Make It Classy Team

This year has been a wild ride, to say the least. It somehow simultaneously feels like the longest yet fastest year ever, and now the holidays are just right around the corner. With all the time spent at home, we can only hope that you’ve had time to slow down and take on some proper self-care despite the whirlwind that is 2020. If not, now is the time to do so.

“Fill your cup” is Make It Classy’s mantra for the holidays this year because most of us probably need it now more than ever, especially with all the stress and hassles of the holiday season on top of everything else. This simple phrase derives from the quote:

“You can’t pour from an empty cup. You have to fill yours first before taking care of others.”

Though the quote is pretty straightforward, we still want to reiterate that it is perfectly okay to step back and slow down for a little while when you need a breather. The holidays make it really easy to put all your energy and efforts into your loved ones yet neglecting your own needs to maintain an overall healthy well-being. Let “Fill your cup” serve as a reminder that you must take care of yourself first in order to be the best version of yourself for others.

If you don’t know where to start, here’s a list of ten things you can do to “fill your cup” today:

  • Take a stay-cation. Use those leftover vacation days before the end of the year, and just spend them safely in the comfort of your own home relaxing and doing things you love.
  • Journal. “Word vomiting” all your thoughts, concerns, frustrations, etc. onto paper releases tension and clears the fog in your head in a cathartic, unfiltered way.
  • At-home Spa Day/Take extra time for skin and hair care. We always tend to pitch this one when it comes to ways of practicing self-care because it really does help and makes you regain some sort of control over your life/well-being when you feel like you may have lost it in the midst of a chaotic period of time.
  • Read a book. Finding a quiet place to yourself and getting lost in a good story can be extremely relaxing and lets you escape reality for a bit.
  • Go on a run/walk outdoors. Some sort of cardio activity is a great way to let your mind wander while also getting your exercise in for the day, so you’ll come back home with a clear mind and calories burned.
  • Don’t forget to buy yourself a gift over the holidays. Again, it can be really easy to put others before yourself during the holidays, but we all know how fun and rewarding it is to indulge in the “treat yourself” mantra every now and then.
  • Have a solo dance party. Blast your favorite music as loud as you can and just dance. It’s bound to put you in a better mood, and you can even do it while cleaning or doing random things around the house!
  • Binge-watch your favorite show/movies. Everyone needs those lazy nights once in a while where you cozy up on the couch with all the yummy snacks and watch things you enjoy until your brain turns to mush (or you fall asleep; whichever comes first!)
  • Video chat or call a friend you haven’t seen in a while. With all the isolation periods of 2020, it’s important to maintain social relationships and keep in touch with those outside of your household as well. Checking up on each other and laughing with an old friend are good for the soul!
  • Work on a hobby you keep putting off. Maybe you forgot how much you love to draw or bake or make DIY home decor. Now’s the time to reach into your archive of neglected little enjoyments in life, pick one, and start rolling with it again!

  • From all of us here at Make It Classy, we hope this helps you take extra care of yourself this holiday season, and please stay safe and surround yourself with as much joy as you can!
